About the Department
The
Department of Japanese Language resides as an independent
department at the National University of Modern Languages.
It includes an Administrative Head and teaching faculty in a

the language in all its forms, and introduce them to the
Japanese culture in its wider contexts; and prepare them

is responsive to the multicultural, multilingual context.
Its goal is to advance the learning of language, and
language use in their broadest frames of reference.

through the language, and thus be in the process of being
called multilinguals. I encourage you all to fully
participate in these programs and enjoy them. The Japanese
Department strives to provide learning opportunities and

MY INTEREST IN JAPANESE LANGUAGE
Shaheena Mustafa
Instructor
It was my passion to learn different languages. I got the opportunity
to learn Japanese language and got diploma in this language
from NUML. After getting diploma I thought it better to gain
confidence and try to become expert in this language. In
fact, this language, as a whole, is very interesting but
difficult at the same time. Its reading, writing and so on
but I have my interest in grammar and conversation. Through
my experience in the Department, I can teach listening,
grammar, conversation and ‘Kanji’ etc. I have had the
experience to attend ‘Teachers Training Programme’ at Japan.
With this experience and my interest, I am teaching this
language as it is also the best way to gain more and more
knowledge.
WHY DID I
SELECT THE JAPANESE LANGUAGE
Syed Majid Ali
Instructor
I had a bent for contemporary languages and culture since
my childhood. I had always been interested to explore the
life style and culture of other countries, especially Japan,
China and Malaysia, which have shown unprecedented and
bewildering progress in different spheres. Amid these
impressions of commendation, I got the chance to stay and
work in Japan for more then 8 years. It further brought me
close to a culture and life style I was already impressed
with. I realized that in order to explore Japan’s wealth of
knowledge and information, one has to develop expertise in
Kanji, which is difficult but equally interesting and
challenging. On return to Pakistan, I joined NUML and
adopted teaching as a profession in the Japanese language
Department. I have a knack for kanji and grammar.
Interestingly Japanese grammar has a correlation with our
national language Urdu. Teaching and refining own skills of
Japanese language have been a unique and cherishing
experience for me at NUML.
HOW DID I GET INTO
LEARNING JAPANESE LANGUAGE
Rafia Fatima
Instructor
Japan had always been of
fascination to me through its progress, unique lifestyle,
dresses, etc. Soon after my marriage, I moved with my
husband to Japan and stayed there for 15 years. This
prolonged stay was eventful and full of experiences. My
fascination increased further when I closely look at the
astounding progress, day-to-day life, festivals and culture.
Japanese don’t understand English, therefore, I initially
had to learn he language as a compulsion to be able to
interact with them. However, later I developed special
interest in Japanese language, as I was excited by the soft
spoken and courteous expressions and greetings. By virtue of
staying in Japan for a long time, I also developed skills to
read and understand most of commonly used ‘Kanjis’. When I
came back to Pakistan, I thought I could contribute in
introducing the Japanese language and life/culture among the
interested and desiring other language seekers. This aim
brought me to the faculty of Japanese Language Department at
NUML, where I, beside teaching conversation, grammar, Kanji
and expressions, also explain the Japanese lifestyle and
culture to the students who intend to proceed to Japan in
official or private capacity. Working in harmony with my
colleagues, I try to delicately blend he theoretical
knowledge with the practical experience, as I saw it.
My Interest in Japanese
Language
Mohd. Sharif
Instructor
Language is the only way to convey something that we write or speak.
It is necessary for a person to have a good command over
native language. It is the only way to survive in a
particular society. I lived in Japan for more than 9 years.
In those years so many times I felt that Japanese language
is essential to communicate conveniently. As I started to
learn it, I felt that it is not an easy job. So I took it as
a challenge and gradually it became easy to me. I got an
opportunity to teach Japanese language at NUML It also
enabled me to increase my proficiency in this language and
open the door to learn more about Japanese language,
culture, customs and traditions.
What Made Me Interested In
Japanese
Muhammad Irfan
Instructor
I have been teaching Japanese language in NUML since August
2006. During my graduation, I have also been studying about
different cultures and countries. Somehow, Japan has always
been the area of interest for me. I started working for a
tourist company in Pakistan. There I came across a lot of
Japanese tourists who were specially interested in our
Northern Areas. These small stints of mutual interaction
further revealed the facets of Japanese life and tradition.
I developed an interest in the language and desired to
further boost Pak-Japan relations. I realized that the gap
could well be bridged through better understanding of each
other’s language. I took it up as a challenge to be an
active part of the team striving to prepare more and more
Japanese language qualified people in Pakistan. My special
areas of interest are conversation and Kanji. I hope to
continue working for promoting the Japanese language, by
working in harmony with my colleagues in the Japanese
Department at NUML.
