Programs offered by International Relations Department

The department of International Relations is offering a wide range of academic programs.

  • PhD: 3-5 years program (semester system)
  • M. Phil: 2-3 years program (semester system)
  • MSc-IR: 2 years program (4 semesters) Morning/Evening
  • MSc – Conflict and Peace Studies  2 years (4 semesters)
  • BS-International Relations: 4 years Program (8 semesters)
  • DIA: Diploma in International Affairs (6 Months duration)
  • CIA: Certificate in International Affairs (Summer Course Program, 5 weeks duration)

Candidates must submit a formal application for admission, available at NUML, Academic branch or download from the university website along with a number of supporting documents, as specified in the form.  The applicants shall appear in a written test and the qualified short listed students shall appear before the departmental selection committee as per schedule announced by the academic branch. The decision to admit a candidate is taken after the interview by the selection board. 


Program Objectives:

The documented measurable objectives of the discipline of International relations are of the focus:

  • To provide conceptual clarity on  theories and practices in IR

  • To introduce students with different regions of the world

  • To develop diplomatic skills of the students

  • To Provide greater access to advance studies in international relations across a wide range of knowledge and expertise

  • To Promote the growth of research activity and professional development through collaboration among practitioners, scholars and faculty with other educational institutions of Higher Education in Pakistan and abroad

  • To equip the learners with research skills and comprehension of contemporary international events, world conflicts and strategies to a peaceful settlement of these international issues/conflicts  through a pragmatic policy-making

  • To Foster inter-university links and promote partnerships among Pakistani as well as international universities

  • To Contribute to the renewal of the professional and educational leadership in Pakistani citizenship

  • To inculcate understanding of Pakistan’s  role in domestic and foreign policy


Scope of the Program:

Program Objectives are the expected accomplishments of graduates;

  • The students of MSc IR are able to join different governmental ministries/departments, in particular Ministry of Foreign Affairs

  • They have bright chances to join any of the International Organizations, such as the United Nations, its various bodies and affiliate agencies.

  • They are also well suited to join Non Governmental and Multinational Organizations.

  • They can also find internship at leading research institute and think tanks, such as the Islamabad Policy Research Institute IPRI, Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad ISSI, Institute of Regional Studies IRS, Institute of Policy Studies IPS Islamabad and South Asian Strategic Stability Institute SASSI.

  • The students can also become IR analysts in print as well as electronic media.

  • They can also join universities as teaching faculty.

  • They can also pursue for further higher education likewise M Phil, Ph D.
