Mass Communication Department
Mass Communication Department
The environment of mass media has changed. The boundaries between mainstream media such as newspapers, radio, and television, and the online media, are becoming blurred. Our programme enables students to enter this new integrated media in a globalized world. Our mission is to produce graduates with knowledge in journalism and mass communication, preparing them to be leaders in these fields. Focusing on mass media concepts, theories and professional practices, in digital lab and studios, students are provided with critical insights along with a comprehensive professional understanding of their respective areas of studies.
1. To prepare students equipped with most modern knowledge for careers in print media, electronic media, online journalism advertising, public relations, mass media research and other sectors relating to media
2. To produce professionally competent mass communicators who are socially responsible, imbued with national, socio-cultural values and dedicated to public welfare and human development
3. To equip graduates with academic knowledge, professional skills and ethical values for handling integrated media
4. To enable these mass communicators with ability in critical thinking, problem-solving and sound judgment, so that they would contribute to the development of society
5. To provide students with strong theoretical and conceptual understanding of the field of mass communication in addition to enhancing their writing skills
6. To enable students to conduct research related to mass communication.
Mr Mufti Jamil-u-din
The spectacular growth of mass media in Pakistan requires a continuing stream of professionals equipped with professional skills both in the print, electronic and the ‘new’ media of on-line journalism. Our effort in the Department of Mass Communication at NUML is to prepare the professional men and women for these fields to meet the challenges of what has often been described as the new information society. Apart from giving necessary academic background, including opportunities for carrying out new researches, our effort is to imbue our students with expertise necessary to come up to the professional challenges of an ever-changing media landscape. The courses offered have both the academic and practical contents, and we continue to revise them in the light of latest developments in various professional fields.
The Department of Mass Communication was established in August 2003 in the university. It offers M.Sc and BS (Hons.) programmes both in the morning and evening sessions. The department also has introduced a special sequence of short courses in print and electronic media.
The department has forty four full-time and adjunct teaching staff which comprises a fine blend of distinguished professionals and young, upcoming academics. We have a set of inquisitive and enterprising students who are eager to learn, and to put to the best use, the skills acquired here in their professional careers as mass media practitioners. There is a professional, dynamic curriculum ready for them to support their ambitions. Here we nurture and produce graduates who would contribute to national growth through creative, innovative and professional use of the mass media.
Up until now, 30 batches have qualified from the department. More than 530 students are currently studying for various courses. To enhance the effectiveness of the programmes, learning a foreign language in the fourth semester has been introduced. Presently, the students are having courses in Arabic, Chinese, French and German.
The department has a Campus Radio (FM 104.6). It provides training to the students in radio and broadcasts programmes daily. The radio is designed to explore academic, intellectual, and creative potentials of the students and teachers along with projecting curricular and co-curricular activities of the university. Students, here, learn script writing, production and editing of various kinds of radio programmes. The programme fare consists of radio documentaries, talk shows, interviews, news bulletins and reports on the proceedings of different events at the campus.
A Media Lab has been established in the department since 31 October 2012. It provides training in the field in television and documentary production. Students are taught about practical aspects of pre-production, production and post-production (editing) of documentaries and dramas.
A Computer lab/Online media Lab equips the students with skills in graphics, digital advertising and online media. It helps students to learn and enhance their skills in online research and writing for social media.
